Degree Requirements
Requirements for the Master of Education (M.Ed.) Degree
Admissions
Prospective master鈥檚 degree students must meet the admission requirements established by the Graduate School. Master鈥檚 degree applicants are considered based on criteria developed and published by the faculty. To be considered for admission to the program, an applicant must have an undergraduate grade-point average of at least 2.50. Presentation of the minimum undergraduate grade-point average does not guarantee admission. Admission decisions are based on all criteria considered in relationship to the need of the program and number of students who can be reasonably accommodated. Applicants who present undergraduate grade-point averages that are lower than those listed above may be considered for admission, pending the evaluation of other indicators.
Program of Study
Students in the program complete the Master of Education (M.Ed.) degree in Counseling.
The minimum total semester credits required for the M.Ed. program is 60. Master鈥檚 degree programs are accredited by the Council for the Accreditation of Counselor Education and Related Educational Programs (CACREP). Programs include 36 counseling core credits, six counseling emphasis area credits, six counseling elective credits, three credits in research, and nine credits in field work.
Retention Standards
Students admitted to the master鈥檚 degree program in Counseling must complete each of the following courses with a grade of B or better before they may enroll in the next course for which that course is a prerequisite: EDGC 6400, 6430, 6440, 6445, 6450, 6535, 6850, 6896 and 6897. Master鈥檚 degree students will be dismissed for any of the following academic reasons: they accumulate six or more hours of grades lower than B in graduate coursework required in their programs of study or their cumulative UNO graduate grade-point average for two consecutive semesters (fall and spring, or spring and fall) is below 3.0.
Transfer of Credit
Master鈥檚 degree students may transfer up to 9 credit hours from another regionally accredited graduate program only after completing 9 hours at UNO with a minimum 3.0 gpa. Only coursework taken at a graduate level and with a grade of B or above may be transferred.
Comprehensive Examination
Master鈥檚 degree students must pass a comprehensive examination, which must be taken near the end of the student鈥檚 degree program. The examination covers all of the core areas of the student鈥檚 field of study.
